A lot of people don’t even know that there’s other neurotoxins out there besides Botox. I get it Botox is the household name, but just like there are different brands of water, there are also different forms of Botox.
There’s other Neurotoxins out there besides Botox?
There are four different FDA approved neurotoxins: Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, and Xeomin. All four of these brands contain the same active ingredient (BoNT-A) and all treat the same aesthetic concern. When this toxin is injected, it blocks the nerves from releasing acetylcholine to the muscle thus decreasing muscle contraction minimizing the appearance of those pesky wrinkles.
Comparing (BoNT-A) Injections
- Botox (onabotulinumA) was the first FDA approved neurotoxin in 2002
- Botox was the first of its kind treating frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines. It is also linked to other medical treatments such as chronic migraines, excessive sweating, and eye spasms to name a few.
- Company is Allergan
- Onset of action is one week with maximum effect in two weeks
- Lasts 3 months
- Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) was FDA approved in 2009
- Dysport has a higher rate of diffusion which makes it ideal for larger treatment areas such as the forehead. However, Dysport is slightly less potent than Botox due to its molecular weight, so you may need more units.
- Company is Galderma
- Onset of action is about 3-4 days with maximum effect in two weeks
- Lasts 3 months
- Jeuveau (prabotulinumtoxinA) aka “NewTox” was FDA approved in 2019
- Clinical data is limited due to its newness, but has been shown to have a similar efficacy profile to Botox
- Company is Evolus
- Onset of action is 2-3 days with maximum effect in two weeks
- Lasts 3 monthsmum effect in two weeks
- Xeomin (incobutlinumtoxinA) was FDA approved in 2011
- Xeomin has a unique purification process where it removes the unnecessary proteins making it more of a “natural” toxin.
- This purer formulation has been linked to a greater efficacy with reduced risk of sensitization or antibody formation, however the clinical relevance of this has yet to be determined.
- Company is Merz
- Onset of action is about 3-4 days with maximum effect in two weeks
- Lasts 3 months
